Ingredients Needed:

  • 2 cups plain flour (all-purpose flour)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 1/2 tbsp / 50g unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup milk

How To Make Flatbread Recipe?

  1. Melt the Butter: Combine the butter and milk in a microwave-safe bowl or on the stove. Heat until the butter is just melted.
  2. Combine the Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the melted butter and milk mixture to the dry ingredients and combine.
  3. Knead the Dough: Sprinkle flour on your work surface, then knead the dough for about 2 minutes until smooth. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour to adjust.
  4. Rest the Dough: Wrap the dough in cling wrap and let it rest at room temperature for 30 minutes.
  5. Roll into Rounds: Dust your work surface with flour, divide the dough into 6 pieces, roll them into balls, and then roll each ball into 20cm (8″) rounds, 2-3mm thick.
  6. Heat the Pan: Preheat a non-stick pan over high heat (no oil needed).
  7. Cook the Flatbread: Place one round of dough in the pan and cook for 1-1.5 minutes, or until it puffs up and develops golden spots. Flip and cook for another 45 seconds to 1 minute until golden and puffy on the other side.
  8. Keep Warm: Stack the cooked flatbreads and wrap them in a tea towel to keep them soft and pliable.
  9. Optional – Brush with Butter or Oil: For a more indulgent touch, brush the flatbreads with melted butter or olive oil. You can also add minced garlic to the butter for a garlic-flavored finish.

Recipe Tips:

  • Don’t Overwork the Dough: Knead the dough only for 2 minutes. Over-kneading can make the flatbreads tough.
  • Use Room Temperature Milk and Butter: This helps the dough come together better and creates a smoother texture.
  • Adjust Flour if Sticky: If the dough feels sticky, add small amounts of extra flour while kneading until it’s manageable.
  • High Heat for Cooking: Cook on high heat to help the flatbreads puff up and get those golden spots. A lower heat may cause them to stay flat.
  • Wrap in a Tea Towel: After cooking, wrap the flatbreads in a tea towel to keep them soft and prevent them from drying out.

How To Store & Reheat Leftovers?

  • Refrigerate: Cool the flatbread to room temperature, then store it in an airtight container or wrap it tightly. Keep it in the fridge for up to 2 days.
  • Freeze: Cool the flatbread and wrap each piece in plastic wrap. Freeze for up to 1 month.
  • Reheat: Heat the flatbread in a pan for 1-2 minutes on each side.
